April Solomon joins me to discuss her journey to become a professional illustrator. April was one of the winners of Illustrators of the Future, Volume 39. She is a traditional fantasy illustrator and specializes in Dragons. Echo recently hired her to collaborate on a fantasy game project they can’t talk about yet, but April’s career is just starting to take off.
About April Solomon In short you might say that April Solomon is a Dragon Specialist. Her meticulous creature designs are mostly inspired by the clever and concise understanding of anatomy, animals, plants, and other organic textures.
She earned her bachelors with an emphasis in drawing and painting at the Laguna Collage of art and design. She has always catered to learning the old masters technique's in order to achieve the appearance of quality through the art of drawing and painting.
After winning her Illustrators of the Future award, she has freelanced for companies such as Chaosium, Hitpoint Press, Galaxy Press Publishing and DCD Collectables. April travels to various conventions in the United States such as: Wonder-con, Dragon-con, IX, and Monsterpalooza where she sells her original work to patrons and collectors for both private and public galleries. One of her dragons proudly hangs on the walls of Laguna College of Art and Design in its private collection.
Hey Echo! I’m so excited to have the opportunity to chat with you, and share what I’ve learned along the way of becoming a self supporting illustrator.
